We love repurposing and recycling bikes for things they were not originally intended.
Klunkers were among the first mountain bikes to exist: Beach cruisers were modified and retrofitted into hillbombing machines capable of going off the pavement and onto the dust in the California sun. When this old Phillips bike came to us as a dilapidated ride, we believed it could have a second life as, you guessed it, a Klunker. Great bikes don't have to be expensive, they have to be fun.
The old bike was first entirely stripped and old components were removed with two exceptions being the original seatpost and bottom bracket. The reason for the bottom bracket not being switched is that it was in surprisingly great shape, and because it was a very nonstandard size. The BB shell of this frame was 80mm instead of the usual 68 or 73. With no reason to change the bottom bracket, we simply took it apart to clean it and put it back.
Vintage BMX Cockpit, Original hubs laced onto 27.5 rims, ONZA Canis Tubeless tires, Italian Leather mini Banana Saddle, New crank and chain, and lots of love.
